Dr.
Les Russell – Chief Executive Officer Les has been the CEO of OrganOx
since the company was formed in April 2008. He holds first class honours and PhD degrees in Chemistry from the University
of London and has more than 25 years experience in the medical devices industry. In
his last position, Les was Managing Director of Chromogenex plc, an AIM listed company developing and manufacturing light
devices for non-ablative surgical and cosmetic use. In his 2 years as Managing Director, sales were increased from £2.4m
to £4.5m and a loss of £150K reversed into a profit of £376K. Earlier, Les
was Director of Marketing and Business Strategy for the Biotech Division of Baxter Export Corporation having been promoted
from the position of Business Unit Manager. Between 1995 and 2000 sales of products were increased from from $25m to $62m,
primarily due to the implementation of a strategy to focus on sales of Factor VIII (from $4m in 1995 to $8.5m in 1998) and
the introduction of new devices for blood transfusion and related therapies. In his last year with Baxter, Les over-achieved
his budget with actual sales of $62m against a $58m budget. In June 2000, Les was appointed
CEO of Gendel Limited, a company developing novel technologies for drug delivery and cancer therapy. In addition to raising
funds for the company, he planned and managed a 20 patient clinical trial for evaluation of CEFUS therapy
in the treatment of basal cell carcinomas. Early in his career, he worked with Ilford Limited, Ciba-Corning Diagnostics
and Cambridge Life Sciences plc. He was promoted to Business Development Director with board responsibility for R&D and
business development activities. Les was instrumental in the sale of CLS first to Medirace (Medeva) and
then to Byk-Gulden and also in the acquisition of Walker Laboratories. Professor
Peter Friend – Medical Director Peter is one of two academic founders of OrganOx and
has been its medical director since April 2008, being primarily responsible for the pre-clinical and clinical trials of OrganOx's
patented normothermic organ perfusion technology. Peter is Professor of Transplantation at
the University of Oxford and Director of the Oxford Transplant Centre, where he is responsible for the kidney, small
bowel and pancreatic transplant programmes. He is also the immediate Past President of the British Transplantation Society.
Earlier in his career, Peter was Clinical Director of the Transplant Centre at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, one
of the UK’s leading liver transplant centres and previously, visiting Assistant Professor of Surgery at Indiana University
Medical Centre, USA where he established their liver transplant programme. Peter's research interests
lie primarily in novel applications of normothermic organ perfusion, ranging from its use for extracorporeal support
to preservation and repair prior to transplantation. He has published over 25 papers on the topic of normothermic perfusion,
the basis of the OrganOx technology, as well as in the areas of clinical transplantation, immune-suppression, monoclonal antibodies,
xenotransplantation, liver perfusion and aspects of general surgery. Professor Constantin Coussios – Technical
DirectorConstantin
is the second academic founder of OrganOx, and has been working with Peter for more than 10 years on the development of normothermic
organ perfusion technology. He has been OrganOx's technical director since April 2008 and leads the company's research
and development activities, being primarily responsible for the device development programme with Team Consulting Limited. He has extensive expertise in general engineering, instrumentation, control, haemodynamics and drug delivery.
Constantin holds BA, MEng, MA and PhD degrees in engineering from the University of Cambridge, following which
he held post-doctoral research positions at the University of Cincinnati and at Boston University. He was then appointed to
the first lecturership in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oxford in 2004 and is currently the Bellhouse Foundation
Reader in Biomedical Engineering and a tutorial fellow of Magdalen College. He heads the Biomedical Ultrasonics and Biotherapy
Laboratory within the Oxford Institute of Biomedical Engineering, a research group of some 20 researchers that has attracted
over £6.5m of research funding to work on novel ultrasound-based therapies for non-invasive surgery and drug delivery.
He has more than 45 publications in the general area of biomedical engineering, and has gained several awards and prizes,
including the Institute of Acoustics young person's award for innovation in acoustical engineering, and a challenging
engineering award from the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. He was elected as the youngest Fellow
of the Acoustical Society of America in 2009. Dr.
